Automotive Terminology
  • Chatter/Shutter – Condition that feels like the vehicle is going over railroad tracks.
  • Cranking – Engine turning but won’t start
  • Squeaking – High pitched noise
  • Grinding – Metal to metal scraping sound
  • Rumbling – Low heavy rolling sound
  • Chirping – Short duration sharp sound
  • Slip – Engine increases speed with no vehicle movement
  • Hot – Engine running 5 minutes or longer, normal operating temperature 195 degrees
  • Cold – Engine off for 3 hours or more
  • Brake Pull – When applying the brakes, vehicle steers to one side or the other.
  • Steering Pull – Vehicle steers to one side or the other while driving.
  • Acceleration – Depressing gas pedal to increase road speed
  • Deceleration – Vehicle slowing down
  • Out of Round – Tire having excessive up and down or side-to-side movement.
  • Flash the Computer – Reprogram the computer to the most current information.
  • Cold Start – The first start of the day
  • Torque Steer – While accelerating vehicle steers to left or right
  • Locking up – Vehicle unable to move when in gear
  • Hesitation – When depressing gas pedal or shifting transmission and having a momentary lack of response.
